The Curious Case of Benjamin Button overview

David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's story, re-teams the director with Brad Pitt, who takes on the title role. What makes Button such a curious case is that when he is born in New Orleans just after World War I, he is already in his eighties, and proceeds to live his life aging in reverse. This sweeping film follows the character's unusual life into the 21st century as he experiences joy and sadness, loves lost and found, and the meaning of timelessness. Cate Blanchett co-stars along with Tilda Swinton, Elias Koteas, and Julia Ormond. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button News & Reviews

"'The first thing out of everybody’s mouth was, ‘How do you make a guy who’s that tall and he’s four years old and he looks 85?’' remembers David Fincher. 'It was more money than they were willing to spend on the movie – by $75m,' says Fincher in one of the myriad featurettes. "

"Slumdog Millionaire may have swept the Baftas on Sunday, but it has finally ceded the top spot at the UK box office, knocked off in its fifth week of release by the one-two punch of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and He's Just Not That Into You. The latest release date for films to qualify for this year's Bafta awards was 6 February. "

"Certain filmmakers are too good to win Oscars. Yet for all these niggles, Fincher’s seventh feature is bold and brilliant enough to show up the tame ambitions of 90 per cent of US filmmakers working today. "

"Aptly for a film so concerned with time, Button is 13 minutes shy of three hours and just flies by. If this is Fincher selling out, can he sell out more often please?"

"Every great filmmaker is allowed one bad film. With each picture, Fincher continues to improve his already impressive filmmaking skills. "

" A thoughtful, meandering film about a life. Beautiful, fragile, sweet, and painful . . . a celebration and memento mori in the same slow breaths."

" I read recently that Pitt spent 5 hours a day sitting in the make-up chair. I feel like I did the same thing watching this movie. Don't get me wrong: it was a well-done production, but the story held no weight. The protagonist didn't learn anything about himself, his fate, or his "experience". The viewer was simply commanded to care about him, in a hackneyed big-budget studio similac kind of way."

" With a run time of nearly 3 hours, I have to say it never got boring. The magnificent story of the entirety of one man's life from end to beginning, it was not quiet like any movie I've seen before. My only complaint is there was a lack of depth for the characters, being so long it seems to me they could have focused a bit more on character development I also thought the ending was a bit odd of a conclusion, but being he aged backwards I really didn't know what to expect."
