The Dark Knight overview

Christopher Nolan steps back into the director's chair for this sequel to Batman Begins, which finds the titular superhero coming face to face with his greatest nemesis -- the dreaded Joker. Christian Bale returns to the role of Batman, Maggie Gyllenhaal takes over the role of Rachel Dawes (played by Katie Holmes in Batman Begins), and Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger dons the ghoulishly gleeful Joker makeup previously worn by Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. Just as it begins to appear as if Batman, Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) are making headway in their tireless battle against the criminal element, a maniacal, wisecracking fiend plunges the streets of Gotham City into complete chaos. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The Dark Knight News & Reviews

"If Pixar ever wanted to make a sequel to The Incredibles, it could do worse than show how its traditional, bright and breezy, family-friendly superhero is coping in the wake of The Dark Knight's success. As the film opens, we might see Mr Incredible and Elastigirl doing their best to fight crime as usual, before realising that it's not so easy taking out the bad guys when your public only wants heroes with severe psychological issues and a penchant for self-hatred."

"Warner Bros is notoriously careful about its superhero franchises. Remember all that vacillation over how to reboot Superman? Bryan Singer's insipid Superman Returns was the result, departing cinemas without leaving execs any the wiser as to how to continue the series. Then there's the mess over Wonder Woman, a project that most might be pleased never to see on the big screen. Though in the hands of Joss Whedon it could presumably have provided some wondrous box office at the very least."

"“We don’t want you doing anything with your hands other than holding on for dear life.” But if Batman’s morality is a construct, The Joker (Heath Ledger) is a wrecking ball. "

"That was Stan Lee's ebullient response when I had the chance to ask him, at a comic book convention in 2007, about the modern rush of superhero victories at the box office. It's a sentiment uniformly applicable to Spider-Man and Ghost Rider alike, but Batman creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger would surely disagree. "

"Ledger?s performance is monumental, but The Dark Knight lives up to it. Nolan cements his position as Hollywood?s premier purveyor of blockbuster smarts ? and the Batbike is kinda cool, too."

"Great movie! Overrated, but still great. Heath Ledger as the joker was brilliant and the movie keeps you entertained so what more could you ask for?"

" Essentially a series of brilliant set-pieces strung together with portentous dialogue scenes. The narrative has no real flow, and is at times, confusing. Ledger is of course excellent. The casting of Eckhart was a mistake, because he seems like a slimeball from the beginning, and this undermines what becomes of him later. All in all a great action flick - tho how it got a 12A certificate is beyond me."

" This movie was really, really long - and I don't typically care for comic book-based movies - but it was done very well. Heath Ledger's portrayal of the joker was pretty excellent, and Christian Bale was competent. And, like all movies ever made, Morgan Freeman was in it. He's busy."
